Getting into dance.

Ballet, contemporary and commercial training routes.

Dance training runs through conservatoires and specialist schools far more than universities, and it starts selection earlier than any other discipline. Conservatoire courses are physically selective and audition in person, usually across multiple rounds.

The four things to know.

The route

Mostly UCAS Conservatoires or direct applications to specialist schools, with some university dance courses on standard UCAS. Auditions are always in person and usually include technique classes, repertoire and sometimes solo performance.

The deadline

Varies by school more than any other discipline. Many conservatoire dance courses follow the 15 October early deadline; others use January or their own dates. Verify every school directly and early.

How they choose

Panels assess technique, physicality, musicality and trainability across a full audition day. They are selecting bodies they can develop over three years, so potential and attitude in class often outweigh polished performance.

What it costs

Audition fees, travel to multiple in-person rounds, and ongoing costs for classes and physiotherapy. Scholarship and Dance and Drama Award funding exists at several schools; apply for it at the same time as the course.

Dance questions, answered.

What applicants to this discipline ask most.

How fit do I need to be for a dance audition?

Audition days run several hours of class and repertoire. Arrive with the stamina to dance full-out repeatedly; panels notice who fades. Injury management matters more than heroics.

Am I too old to start dance training at 19 or 20?

For contemporary and commercial routes, no; cohorts regularly include students up to their mid twenties. Classical ballet routes select younger, but exceptions exist. Ask schools directly.

What do I wear to a dance audition?

Fitted practice wear the panel can see your line in, in whatever style the school specifies. Read the audition pack; some schools are precise about it.
