Applying by 15 October: Your Two-Week Creative Checklist
A calm, do-this-now checklist for the 15 October creative deadline: references, the three-question statement, portfolio, auditions and your five choices.

If you are applying to a conservatoire or drama school for 2027 entry, your deadline is not January. It is 6pm on 15 October 2026, months before your friends applying for standard degrees. That early date catches out more creative applicants than anything else in the process.
The good news: two weeks is enough, if you spend it on the right things. Here is the plan, working backwards from the deadline. Do not try to do all of it at once. Do the top of the list first, because the thing most likely to sink you is the one part you do not control.
Two weeks out: the reference
Your reference is the single item you cannot write yourself, which makes it the one to sort first. An application without a completed reference is not submitted, no matter how polished everything else is.
- Ask today if you have not already. Give your referee the deadline in writing and make it clear it is earlier than the usual January one. They may have a queue.
- Brief them. A good creative reference speaks to how you work, not just your grades: your commitment to practice, how you take feedback, what you make when nobody sets the brief. Hand them a short note of things worth mentioning. Our guide to references for creative applicants covers exactly what to give them.
- Confirm they can hit the date. If they cannot, you need to know now, not on 14 October.
One week out: the statement and the work
With the reference in motion, turn to the parts that are yours.
The personal statement. UCAS now asks three structured questions inside a shared 4,000-character limit: why this course, how your studies have prepared you, and what else you have done to get ready. For a creative course this is the narrative glue between your grades and your portfolio or audition, not the main event, so it should be tight and specific. If it is still blank, start from the creative personal statement guide and the annotated examples, and draft all three answers before you polish any of them.
The portfolio or audition pieces. You will not usually submit these through UCAS by 15 October; the application earns you the invitation, and the review or audition comes after. But the work needs to be far enough along that an invitation would not panic you.
- Log what you have and what is missing against the portfolio checklist.
- For auditions, have your prepared pieces chosen and roughly learned. Polish comes later; choice does not. See what to expect at a drama-school audition.
The last 48 hours: choices and details
- Lock your five choices. Remember that some drama and dance schools apply entirely outside UCAS and do not use up your five, so a mixed list is normal. If you are not sure which of your courses even sits on this deadline, run the deadline checker.
- Read every field. Course codes, campus codes, start year. A wrong code is a wrong application.
- Reread the statement out loud. You will hear the clumsy sentence you cannot see.
- Check the reference is attached and complete. Not requested. Complete.
Press send with a day to spare
Do not aim for 5:59pm on the 15th. Servers are busy, references arrive late, and nerves rise. Submit on the 14th if you can, and spend the last day double-checking rather than scrambling.
If you are honestly not ready
Sending a weak application to beat a deadline helps nobody. If the work or the statement is not there, it is worth knowing your options before you rush: some direct-application schools run later rounds, and for many university creative courses the real deadline is January anyway. Check which of your choices actually falls on 15 October first, because you may have more time than the panic suggests.
