A Level Results Day 2026: What to Do, Hour by Hour
The exact results day playbook for creative applicants: what happens at 8am, when Clearing opens, what to say on the phone, and the portfolio rule nobody mentions.

Results day rewards the people who planned it like a shoot day: everything prepped, so the day itself is just execution. Here is the full playbook for Thursday 13 August 2026, written for creative applicants, whose version of this day has quirks the generic guides miss.
The week before
- Charge everything and find your login. UCAS Hub password, personal ID, the email account you registered with. Results morning is not the time for password resets.
- Get your portfolio Clearing-ready. This is the creative-specific step everyone skips. Courses in Clearing move fast, and many will ask to see work within 48 hours. Export a single PDF (15 to 20 pages, under 20MB) or tidy a link. Audition disciplines: have one recent self-tape ready to send. Our portfolio guide covers the edit.
- Write your one-paragraph pitch. Course applied for, grades expected, one line on your creative work. You will say it on the phone several times if the day goes sideways.
- Know your list B. Spend twenty minutes noting three to five courses you would genuinely accept, with their Clearing phone numbers. Doing this calm beats doing it panicked.
Results morning, hour by hour
8.00am: grades from your school or college. Not from UCAS. Collect in person if you can; teachers can act fast on your behalf on this one day.
8.15am-ish: UCAS Hub updates. It shows your confirmation status, not grades. Three outcomes: your firm confirmed (done, celebrate, ignore the rest of this article), your insurance confirmed, or Clearing has opened for you.
If you missed your grades but the Hub has not updated: wait before panicking. Universities confirm near-misses all the time, and creative courses do it more than most, because your audition or portfolio already answered their real question. Give it until mid-morning before you act.
If you are in Clearing: phone, do not email. Calls get places; emails join a queue. Have your UCAS personal ID, grades and pitch in front of you. Ask two questions the panic usually deletes: “what will you need to see from me and by when?” and “when do I need to decide?”
The creative Clearing difference
Standard Clearing advice ends at “phone the university”. For creative courses there is a second stage: many will want a portfolio, showreel or recorded audition before confirming, sometimes with a video call to a course leader. This works in your favour. It means creative Clearing decisions rest on work, not just grades, and a strong portfolio can outweigh the grade that got you here. It also means the prepared applicant beats the talented-but-scrambling one.
Respected institutions appear in creative Clearing every single year. Places open up because other people’s plans changed, not because courses are weak. Treat the vacancy list as a genuine second market, not a discount bin.
What not to do
- Do not accept the first offer out of relief. You can hold a Clearing conversation without committing. “When do you need my decision?” is always a fair question.
- Do not release your firm place to shop around unless you are certain. Release is one-way.
- Do not post your results on social media before you have sorted your place. Admissions teams do occasionally look, and your negotiating position is your own business.
- Do not decide the whole future today. A gap year with a stronger portfolio is a real option, not a failure state, and for several disciplines it produces better applicants. If today has knocked you flat, read it is not the end of the world before deciding anything.
If you did better than expected
You can release yourself and look upward through Clearing. Before you do: you chose your firm for the studios, the tutors, the city, the feel. None of that changed overnight because a letter did. Upgrade for a concrete reason, not for a ranking.
The paperwork after
Once confirmed anywhere new: student finance needs updating with the new course and institution (do it the same week), accommodation applications open immediately (Clearing students still get housed, but the good options go fast), and your travel and packing plans compress into six weeks. All manageable. All easier if the portfolio PDF was ready on Tuesday.
Dates refer to the 2026 exam cycle. Confirm results arrangements with your school and check ucas.com on the day.
